On Thursday, September 17th, 11 ROTC cadets and one cadet aide departed New London High School for basic leadership training at Camp Niantic in East Lyme.
At approximately 1500 (3 p.m.) the school van got eerily quiet as Senior Chief Smith departed the van and turned the green horned cadets over to the U.S. Army drill instructors. As the drill instructors approached the van, Cadet Ariella "Ace" Ventura thought to herself, "What have I done to myself?"

She watched in horror as her sea bag was launched out of the van and onto the parade field. She recovered it finally and commenced her first of many pushups that weekend. Cadet James McPherson (Jimmy Mack) couldn't believe how many push-ups and sit-ups he had to do right away. "I did them, but I wasn't happy", said Jimmy Mack. All 11 cadets watched in disbelief as Senior Chief drove away, for now they knew they were on their own for four days, left to the United States Army drill instructors.

That first night Kennen Santiago lay in bed nervously thinking about the intensity that surrounded him that day and how concentrated and focused he had to be in order to achieve his goal of completing this training.
"I knew I was physically prepared" said Santiago, "but mentally I couldn't believe that the day had arrived and I was with 200 other mentally and physically tough cadets who had the same goal of completing this challenge."

Santiago said the food was good and he liked the quietness of the mess hall during chow time. After successfully completing four days of intense military style training which included physical fitness, team-building, and drill, cadets were allowed to wear the NJROTC collar device.

Cadet Nichole Roman said "she never felt so proud of herself when they pinned my collar devices on and I got to march on the parade field for pass and review at graduation".
